Shereen’s Closet

Posted by admin - Under: Before & After

When my best gal pal Shereen called me and asked me to help her organize her closet I was delighted!

All the world is a stage!

After 6 years of offering to organize her and being turned down, I felt victorious.

She had just moved into a new place and her new closet was unusable.

Now, I know what an honor it is to be invited into someone’s home-their sanctuary…and to be trusted as a mindful expert who can handle the process with the gentle care that it deserves-here was my opportunity to be that person for someone that I love to death.

Also, I have been searching for some time to find a way back to the roots of what truly inspires me as an organizer.

Yes, it is being compared to a chopstick!

And as I was demolishing her closet with her tiny flowered hammer-
I was returned to the simple pleasure of organizing, the reason I began doing this in the first place-
Taking something non-functioning and turning into something completely functional.

When something is organized and pretty and everything has a place you don’t want to clutter it up. It is a joy to use what is there, because it works.

So when I got to swing a hammer and hang new shelves and a new curtain rod I was thrilled. I was sweaty and using power tools. Bliss!

She had a closet that had one shelf, two makeshift skinny shelves, and a curtain rod that hung just below that top shelf. It was unreachable!

In my tallest stilettos it was unreachable. You could, at best, yank at the hem of the clothes to get it off the hanger, destroying it in the process and then everything would end up on the floor cause you’d have to get a chair from the kitchen to put your clothes away.

Not pretty!

I tore it all out and hung two shelves and a curtain rod where a girl in bare feet can reach it.

We were able to get everything up and off the floor-
So you can walk into the walk in closet, you can see the shoes and choose a pair and walk out and shut the door.

It went from unusable to usable in 2.5 hours-refurbished, organized and everything put away. It was within her budget.

I didn’t have my spackle or white paint to cover the holes. I didn’t have sweater boxes to stack on the shelves. And some other things that I am used to installing with an unlimited budget…but frankly unlimited budgets have not provided me with any more organizing satisfaction-it has just furthered my own perfectionism.

Everything up, up and away!

Lastly, I always forget to take before photos and was reluctant to take after photos because the closet wasn’t “done”. And as another step to dismantling my own perfectionism, I am posting the pictures I do have.

She is thrilled. She can get to her clothes. What more could you want from a closet?

Oh, right-shoes!

Ah, the closet floor! Mmmm, shoes!
